Show and Tell

Boy oh boy, it felt good to snuggle these two babes this morning, all cozied up in our bed together, climbing on top of one another, laughing and catching up. We told them we missed them. It's true, we did. How can you not miss those cheeks? I want my children to know every single day that I love them more than pizza.

But I also want them to know we, the mom and dad, we love each other too and we, not just as mom and dad, but as husband and wife, we are important to each other too. I want my children to know taking time out for each other, for our relationship, is necessary for the soul. And time for our children to have space away from us, to engage and relate with other people, especially with grandparents who will spoil them from morning to night, that is equally as valuable.

So we snuggle up and reconnected about our weekend. We asked questions, shared pictures, listened to stories. A little show and tell session right there in the bed. There was a little extra energy on reserve for us on the parent side after a weekend of childless bliss. I know a big part of that was the heart growing fonder, as the old saying goes. But also, I want to teach my children that we can celebrate life together as much as we can apart. I hope that they can cheer us on as partners understanding the importance of this kind of relationship. We have fun, it may not always include them and that is okay. Because they can have fun without us too.

Today we got back to reality. Dishes were washed, bottoms were wiped, children were crying. But the day started with the snuggliest hug and the biggest grin and a family that was happy to celebrate and share our adventures together and apart.
